Kushti is a sport of endurance and strength, but given the time that matches are fought, endurance is key. Two men approach, cast dirt at their feet onto their respective opponents, clinch, and then are off to the races. They break apart, and shortly sweat is pouring down (it takes place in India and there's lots of humidity), and so more dirt is placed by the two opponents for the purpose of being able to secure a hold on each other's bodies. Ultimately, the winner is the one who can wrestle the other to the ground. (I am sure I am leaving out essential details, Reader, so forgive me.) But, I will say the physiques of these men reveal muscle as large as three stumps for legs, and they aren't skinny anywhere else. Some have no six packs I grant you, but there are solidly built. But, believe me, there's not a one who wouldn't prove to be a major asset as a bouncer at a bar.

Just as impressive is the training these men engaged in from what looks like they are hoeing up the "back forty" prior to engaging in sparring. They are also noted for doing endless Hindu pushups to climbing ropes, and more. These warriors are focused on diet, which doesn't look particularly appetizing; chocolate protein smoothies are not to be seen anywhere.. In short, these guys could step into any army of the world and prove to be almost invincible.

There is one video I have seen where an American grad, who had a background in wrestling visited one of these academies and he was pretty fit. He wrestled one of these guys who was far from an equal in musculature or weight. Well, the American discovered that the earth that was hoed up it wasn't soft when he got tossed.

We have members who like to try out Turkish oil wrestling; well, they might want to try something different. They might be surprise as to which proved more challenging.

This is such a lovely homage to the sport and its cultural background.

I just wanted to briefly supplement this post with one minor addition. The winner of the match is determined by simultaneously pinning both of their opponent's shoulders to the ground. In some matches, this is extended to pinning both shoulders and hips to the ground, simultaneously.

Only on YouTube, but wow are there some great bouts and incredible wrestlers in kushti. Some really challenging bouts and very rough action, and some of the guys are just tanks. The amazing Sikandar Shaikh in particular—incredibly skilled and incredibly strong—just a force of nature! 🤩🤩🤩🤩

I never participated but you're right, it looks like a helluva lot of fun! I've long dreamed of a wrestling match in mud or water, like a lake shore or river. Let us know if you eveer get the chance. Wish I could be there!
