Freestyle wrestling is the international version of American folk style wrestling seen in American high school and college competitioin. It emphasized pinning as a way to win, but wrestlers get points for taking their opponents down from the standing position, reversals on the mat and exposing the other wrestler's back to the mat. Skill, endurance, mental toughness and strategy, balance, strength and aggressiveness are all part of what makes a winning freestyle wrestler. The rules discourage the use of holds or moves that could injure another wrestler. There is no punching, kicking etc.
